At a glance…
In 2010, GBAPP provided a number of essential services in our community and achieved our agency goals with the following major accomplishments:
- Our 5th Annual City Kidz Got Skillz talent and art show drew in over 50 kids! Top prizes for the talent show went to singer Maya Oquendo, dancer Justin Anderson, and guitarist G. Arthur Korth-Rockwell.
- Federal grant awarded by Substance Abuse and Mental Health Service Administration/ Center for Substance Abuse Prevention in the amount of $300,000/year for five years from CSAP for the Odyssey Project, a substance abuse and HIV prevention program for college aged young people ages 18-24; partnership with the University of Bridgeport.
- Completed major construction project—enclosed the porch area at Housing for Success to expand administrative and training space.
- The NIA Alliance, a group of community women organized in 2006 by GBAPP’s HIV Deputy Director Nancy Kingwood Small, received training to provide rapid HIV testing for at-risk individuals in Bridgeport. The first in the state with DPH authorization.
- Provided evidence-based human sexuality education at Harding High school for 3 years and saw a decreased teen births at the school from 64 live births (2008) to 14 live births (2011) among enrolled students .
- GBAPP Teen Fathers Program received Certification by CT Department of Social Services, the only teen dads program to receive state certification.
- The Bridgeport Superintendent of schools selected GBAPP to act as lead agency and fiduciary for the Central High School Leadership Team, a substance abuse prevention, treatment and recovery program.
- Executed a successful 30th Anniversary Dinner with the Three Doctors attending, bringing 400 kids for the Assembly at Central High School and an additional 250 people to the dinner celebration.
- Officially changed organizational name to GBAPP, Inc. from the Greater Bridgeport Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Program. Revised logo, letterhead, business cards, etc.
